Cosmopolitan
The Cosmopolitan is a drink that first made an appearance around the 1980's. It's origins are pretty hard to fathom; some say it was a marketing stunt for Ocean Spray cranberry juices, others claim it was born in the 70's gay community in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The most likely story, however, is that it was adapted from a sickly sweet pink cocktail someone ordered, in order to provide a thirst-quenching, stealthily alcoholic drink for the waiting staff at Dale Degroff's Rainbow Rooms in New York.
It's a fantastically well balanced cocktail, with the sour taste of the lime well balanced by the sweet citrus taste of Cointreau. The kick of vodka, especially the fantastic Absolut Citron, is balanced by the cranberry juice.
Shaken hard, the drink should be a lovely pink colour. Make sure you serve it straight up in a martini glass, or at least a short glass without ice.
Enjoy this cocktail with care; it's called the stealth martini for a reason. While MacGyver may have enjoyed more than his fair share of them, make sure you drink responsibly.Recipe:
35 ml Vodka (ideally Absolut Citron)
15ml Cointreau
Juice of half a lime
100ml Cranberry juice
Shake all ingredients together and strain into a glass.
Garnish with an orange flame. To do this, cut a 2p sized piece of rind from an orange, not including any flesh. Hold the rind between finger and thumb, and squeeze so the oils spray across the drink. Hold a flame in the way so it's more impressive...
